2013 Las Vegas SEMA Auto Show Coverage

Every year, thousands of consumers, automotive industry retailers, and enthusiasts gather at the Las Vegas Convention Center for the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show. Companies from all over the world gather in Las Vegas for one memorable week which showcases the industry’s newest products, car builds, and more! We were not able to visit this year, but we’ve compiled a preview of what is at the show this year. The pictures in this coverage are sourced from various online sites such as Stancenation, Speedhunters, Autospies, Europeancarweb, and Mercurynews. SEMA draws all types of cars to the show; there are traditional muscle cars and hat rods, completely customized road vehicles, a modified FedEx delivery truck, full race cars, exotic cars and more so there is nearly an endless list of mechanical eye candy to stare at.

First, let us take a look at one of the most popular car of choice for builds this year; the Scion FR-S. Thanks to the large support from the aftermarket industry for this car, it is no doubt that this is a popular platform to build for enthusiasts. There are plenty of FR-S’s at the SEMA show this year.

Examples like the SpeedElement Scion FR-S from San Jose sporting the classic Rocket Bunny body kit, a unique duck bill rear lip and some aggressive MTechnica 2 piece wheels.

Aggressive wheels, body kit, and wing seem to be the trending style among the Scion FR-S and Subaru BR-Z crowd.

The Rocket Bunny kit has been quite popular with the FR-S and BR-Z crowd and since they practically the same vehicle, you see the kit on both cars. This blue Vortech Supercharged Subaru BR-Z has on the Rocket Bunny version two kit which was just released not too long ago.

It’s almost rare to see a FR-S or BR-Z without a Rocket Bunny kit these days so it’s a breath of fresh air to see something more different. Check out those fog light housings! We have some similar setups for the stock body vehicle as well.

However, I digress, the Rocket Bunny version two comes with LED daytime running lights arranged in a row which is quite unique. They go very well with the more aggressive styling of the newer kit.

Did we mention there are some pretty cool engine swaps as well at SEMA? The same FR-S above is rocking a single turbo 2JZ-GTE motor from a Toyota Supra instead of the traditional 4 cylinder 4U-GSE that came from the factory.

More 2JZ swaps? Sure why not; this time it’s on the newer 2014 Lexus IS350 Sport. The new Lexus IS models are also quite popular this year as well as the other newer models to hit showroom floors from all the manufacturers.

This VIP Auto Salon and Robert Evans collaboration of the 2014 Lexus IS350 F Sport is quite a looker, aggressive lines and a loud wheel color choice go very well together.

And of course, we have the not-so-aggressive builds such as this A’pexi Lexus IS. Subtle changes to the exterior go a long way.

There is also the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray on display! The lines are more sharp and straight rather than contoured like the previous models, but it’s definitely not bad looking.

Since SEMA draws a whole variety of builds, it’s not surprising to see fully built race cars sitting at various vendor booths around the convention center. The Evasive Motorsports Scion FR-S is definitely no slouch and is competing in the Global Time Attack/Super Lap Battle event later this month at Buttonwillow Raceway in Southern California.

The aerodynamics on race cars may seem strange and ugly to some, but function over form is preferred by these race teams. The FX Motorsports Acura NSX is a great example of this and is also competing in the Global Time Attack/Super Lap Battle.

Other vehicles like this Nissan GT-R from R-Rydes is sporting a set of LED lights in the front bumper; these seem like daytime running lights to us.

2013 and up Nissan 370Z LED Daytime Running Light Enabling Kit

There are many newer vehicles that come with factory equipped daytime running lights, but there are more and more vehicles that are becoming equipped with LED daytime running lights; an example would be the 2013+ Nissan 370z. The 2013 and up models come with a vertically installed LED daytime running lamp on the sides of the front bumper that are on during the day and turn off at night when the low beam headlights are on. Our DRL Enabling Kit will allow the DRLs to be on with the low beam headlights at night.

The daytime running lamps are on during the day usually, hence their name, but for vehicles like the 2013+ Nissan 370z where the bumper does not have a location for fog lights, these are a logical solution for fog lights during the night as well. Our LED DRL Enabling Kit will draw power from the parking lights in the headlights to keep the lights on during the night with the headlights. The kit comes with quick splices for an easy installation so nearly everything is provided to do the job; all that needs to be provided is zip ties and electrical tape which is something every DIY-er should already have in their possession.

Our Standard LED Interior Kits are Now Sold with 1210-SMD LEDs

All our Standard LED Interior Packages now come with 1210-SMD LED chips on the bulbs instead of the basic refractor LED diodes that were far less superior compared to these lights. The basic 3mm LED diode typically produce 2.5 lumen whereas these 1210-LED diodes produce 5 lumen per diode so they are double the brightness. It is an only normal to assume that with brighter lights, they would come at a higher cost, but thanks to innovative manufacturing improvements we able to produce these brighter lights at the same cost as the previous version. There are several other improvements in light output and color with this version.

The LED interior package shown in the pictures is on a Nissan Altima and is our Ultra Blue color. Just like the old version, the newer and brighter version retains all our color selections; Xenon White, Ultra Blue, and Brilliant Red. The color is also much richer to the eyes compared to the refractor version. The beam pattern of the light is much more wide spread; SMD LED lights have a flood light beam pattern so there is more available light. The refractor LED lights were more of a spot light style and would not spread the light as well. We’re confident that our customers will appreciate a much brighter and better light at the same low cost as before.

3rd LED Brake Light Conversion Kit DIY Done On Scion FR-S

A very common addition that many of the newer vehicles are attempting is the installation of a stylish third brake light. In this case, it’s a conversion of the red lens that came on the car from factory into a fully functioning running and brake light. Fortunately, for the Scion FR-S and Subaru BR-Z, the factory bumper comes with a red lens near the rear diffuser that covers an empty housing. The iJDMTOY LED FRS 3rd Brake Light Conversion Kit will turn that housing into a functioning safety upgrade.

Since these lights are utilizing the factory location, extensive modifications are not required. The kit includes a drill bit that is used to create a hole for the socket and LED bulb to fit in. Each kit includes a red 18-SMD 3-Emitter 5050 LED bulb that will produce a noticeable amount of light and comes with all the parts needed for installation; you just need to supply the electrical tape and tools.

The combination of the red lens and red LED bulb produces a glow that will match many aftermarket LED tail lights and the factory center brake light behind the rear window. The lights can be wired to act as just a Scion FR-S 3rd Brake Light, turning on only when the brakes are applied. Alternatively, the lights can also be wired to act as the running and brake lights as well; this will act like the outside tail lights at night. While these lights are marketed specifically towards the Scion FR-S and Subaru BR-Z, it can be also used on other vehicles with a similar light setup such as the 2009 and up Nissan 370z and more.

Replacing the stock bulbs is very easy task – look underneath where the lights are, press one side of the license plate light housing to unlatch and pop it out. If not, please flip the bulb 180 degrees and try again. Then put back the cover and pop it back in. That’s all.
